Careers in Power

On Wednesday, February 23, Kim Liebig, Outreach Programs Specialist with Nebraska Public Power District, presented a program in Mrs. Kort & Mr. Nilson’s math classes. She discussed the wealth of opportunities opening up in the energy field and the requirements to get some of those positions. She explained that people with technical skills qualify for a variety of positions and are respected and well-paid in the electric utility industry. There is a high demand for skilled workers and it is projected that in the near future, the energy industry will see a major shortage of workers in key areas of its workforce.

The programs that Nebraska colleges offer relating to high demand careers in the energy industry include:  Utility Line Technician, Wind Energy, Energy Generation Operations, Welding Technology, Pre-Engineering, Engineering, Electrical Technology, Electronics Technology, Electromechanical Technology, and Industrial Technology. In addition, there are many other careers in the Electric Utility Industry which include Finance & Accounting, Maintenance & Repair, Drafting, Environmental, Power Plant Operations, & Nuclear Positions.

Mrs. Liebig also stressed with the students the importance of math, science, and English classes for a technical career field. Furthermore, she cautioned the students to beware of certain behaviors that could prevent them from being hired in the future. For example, drug/alcohol use and even their Facebook postings!
