It was a very warm and muggy evening on Friday, Aug. 20 at the Bill Harder Memorial Field as the Creighton football team went head-to-head at their annual soap scrimmage.
The team this year consists of 40 players. There are 9 seniors, 6 juniors, 7 sophomores, and 18 freshmen. Fifteen lettermen return from last year’s squad.
A sizeable crowd turned out to watch the players. Instead of the traditional soap used for admission, the team collected sports drinks.
A big change for the 2010 season is the adoption of 8-man football caused by the declining enrollment in the high school. According to Assistant Coach Patrick Moore, the formations of 8-man are similar, but some of the language is different. The playing field is also reduced in size.
The predicted starters and the scout team played the first part of the scrimmage.
“The starters performed as expected, with only a few penalties,” Moore said.
The next few series of plays had mixed teams of starters and second teamers.
The highlight of the night came when the sophomores and freshmen duked it out in a scrimmage. It was a hard battle by both sides with the score even when the final whistle sounded.
The linemen and running backs are the team’s biggest strengths this year,” senior Kyle Berglund said.
A barbecue provided by the parents of the football players concluded the night.
