Creighton Public Schools Band Program

The Marching Band Program

The marching band provides entertainment for the home football games and occasionally away games. It performs annually at festivals, contests, pep rallies and games. Membership requires intense dedication from all its members and 100% effort from each individual in the entire band.

Attendance is mandatory at all rehearsals during the marching band season. Excused absences from school or due to illness are considered excusable conditions. The band director must be notified prior to the rehearsals or performance. Work conflicts with rehearsals are unexcused absences.

Grading Policy

Everyone begins the band program with an A grade.  You keep that grade by following rules, responsible actions, attending functions and performances.

Attendance: Is mandatory. We have a limited amount of time to prepare to function as a group, so it is vital that everyone be present at every rehearsal and performance. In order to function everyone must be there.

If you miss a rehearsal, or need to be excused from one, the best way to make that time up is to practice. Talk with the band director about getting practice forms to take home and be signed by parents in order to make up time.

Assignments: Total 100 points each quarter

Home Game- 10 points

Arrive on time to change into uniform if necessary. If you are on time and are properly dressed, you get the full 10 points. You are representing the band, your community, and your school, so dress accordingly!

Parades/Contests- 10 points

Be prepared and on time to receive full credit.

Instrument checks- 5 points

Random instrument checks will be done. Each item is worth one point:

Pencil (for marking music or in-class assignments), music, instrument at school, instrument ready, instrument in working condition.

Memory checks- 15 points

These will be done to see if students have memorized required material at an acceptable standard. There will be music and scales on the checks. You will know when they are in advance and what they cover.

Excused Absences:

Medical emergency or serious personal injury.

Death in the immediate family.

Directors approval within 7 days prior to day absent.

Lessons

Any student wishing to take lessons may express their desire to do so. Any time before, during, or after school may be available. Lessons can be one half hour, but time restraints may force 15-20 minute lessons. Junior high who have recently switched instruments should definitely take lessons to learn the technique of that instrument

Band Facilities

Band Office and Telephone

The band office is off limits to students unless asked to enter by the director. This is not a student lounge. The band office is a very busy and a very small place. The telephone is for official band use. It must be available for use by the directors first. It is available for student use in regards to band business only. Do not call friends or employers. The phone should be used to call parents for rides following rehearsals or performances and in cases of emergency.

Band Room Care and Maintenance

There is to be no food or drink in the band room at any time except water. Instruments are always either with you or in the storage area. Never leave instruments on the band room floor. Percussion instruments should be stored, covered or placed in percussion cabinet following each rehearsal. Clothing left in the band room will be placed in the school lost and found or thrown away after an extended period of time. Stands must be placed at sides of room unless there is another class using them.

Uniform Policy

Members of the Creighton band will be issued a performance uniform.  Full uniform and all accessories are required for every performance unless otherwise stated by the director. Gym shorts and a white t-shirt must be worn underneath uniform. Black sock are also required.

Student uniforms are VERY expensive and students are responsible for any damage to them (outside of normal wear and tear).

Students will have an inspection prior to each performance to ensure the complete and proper wearing of the uniforms.  Complete uniforms are a prerequisite to performance in public.  Jewelry is not allowed to be worn with your uniform.

At the completion of any performance, uniforms are to be turned in to the uniform closet.  Uniforms are NOT to be taken home.

Whenever you are wearing your uniform you are displaying the highest standard of conduct possible. You are a representative of your band, school, and community.

Student Leaders

Those wishing to try out for student leadership will have to schedule a time with Mr. Thoendel to interview for the position and go over responsibilities. Those include, but are not limited to: offering suggestions for half-time shows, helping with sectionals, offering advice for music ideas, offering input for direction of band program.

Mr. Thoendel and the administration reserve the right to change or modify any policy that is deemed to be unfair, unneeded, or inadequate. Students will be notified of any policy change.

Statement of Awareness and Agreement to Terms

I hereby am made aware to the fore mentioned terms, rules, regulations and hereby agree to follow and be held responsible for any infraction or violation of any rule, regulation, or guideline.
